~ The time to rejoice and celebrate a historic milestone in modern history is the election of Joe Biden as president and Kamala Harris as vice president of the United States. An achievement it is, but the real fulfillment was in getting rid of Donald Trump, the pathological liar, the cheat, the abuser, the tax evader. For people of color, Senator Harris' election is even of greater significance.

TIME TO HEAL, REJOICE AND CELEBRATE
With Biden and Harris, a Historic Milestone Unfolds

TORONTO - Like many others south of the border, I rejoice the moment I read the breaking news that Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have wrestled the US presidency and vice presidency from the current holders in the White House.
Hours later, thousands of people were singing and dancing in the streets of Washington, DC, and elsewhere to celebrate their triumph, and the larger meaning it conveys to the rest of the world that saw nothing but hatred and vitriol emanating from the top echelons of leadership.
That Donald Trump is stopped on his tracks to further sow division and violence is cause enough to make us all merry. That he's dumped by a large majority of the people gives us hope for a better future as world citizens.
I'm glad we'll be done with Trump Inc., the criminal family, and the patrons he had pardoned. A world without Trump is a safer world, a peaceful world, a wonderful world. I do wish his loyalists and supporters would see the light.
Possessed with all the powers of the US presidency, Trump is the single most dangerous and destructive person on earth. He has demonstrated an open disregard for law and order; he has exploited institutions, abused people, especially women and people of color; consorted and idolized authoritarians and fascists, etc.
Four years of Trump had brought about a combustible mixture of hate and racism, of division and inequality, of fear-mongering and armed confrontation. Another four years would be worst for freedom- and peace-loving people across the world.
I feared a civil war being ignited in some midwestern states in defense of Trump whose intransigence and outright refusal to accept an honorable defeat would cause widespread unrest.
Before going to bed on the night of the US elections, I psyched myself up that the outcome would be what I had hoped and predicted - Biden is elected president and Harris vice president.
Six hours later, I woke up to find the results of the presidential race still seesawing between Trump and the challenger he has consistently mocked as "Sleepy Joe".
Now, "Sleepy Joe" has awakened and cruised to victory. Undoubtedly, he had caused Trump sleepless nights. He made him a lame-duck president just waiting to give up, by constitutional mandate, the power that he has so brazenly abused.
But Trump, ridiculed as "liar-in-chief" for his many lies, is not going down without a fight, even if it means subverting the electoral and judicial processes. There are several lawsuits questioning the elections in Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania, obviously to help stem the tide of his impending political demise.
My dream is to see Trump, and what critics call the "Trump crime family" that includes JaVanka (that's Jared and Ivanka), and his two adult sons, Don Jr., and Eric, out of the political arena. Four years had been long enough to prove his incompetence as a leader of the free world.
Four more years would have been more taxing and stressful for many of us who believe in democracy and the freedoms that come with it. If the buzz is to be believed, four more years would have prepared Ivanka to take a crack at the presidency.
It made me feel queasy thinking about the possibility of bloody unrest once a defeated Trump held on to the presidency and refused to leave. Out of office and rendered powerless, Trump would be swamped with lawsuits after lawsuits. That's a real prospect. He could land in jail, as a matter of fact.
As a person of color and a woman at that, Harris' election holds a greater significance for me. Her Black (father is from Jamaica) and Asian (mother is from India) heritage is a mainstream recognition of leadership ability. It's a turning point that could change the perception about Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and also those in the ethnic and racial spectrum.
When news about Trump's defeat erupted across the globe, people spontaneously took to the streets, singing, dancing, waving American flags, gathering in huge numbers as if impervious to the coronavirus pandemic. It was as if the whole world was freed from tyranny and darkness. (Copyright 2020. All Rights Reserved).
