TORONTO - Three restaurants in Toronto and their fairly young chefs were handpicked by the Philippine Consulate to participate in this year's iteration of Filipino Restaurant Month in Canada (FRMC), according to officials.

As it goes on its fourth year, the project reorients and expands its following, specifically targeting mainstream patrons in addition to the traditional Filipino diaspora.

The refinements are being introduced, officials said, "to give special focus to young and upcoming chefs and establishments catering to the mainstream market."

"The format isn’t set in stone," they explained, "and we certainly look forward to future collaboration with other restaurants offering Filipino cuisine, both in the context of the FRMC and for other Consulate initiatives."

The three restaurants - Mineral, Mother Tongue, and Islas - are known for their innovative approach to Filipino cuisine, fusing some with non-Filipino dishes and reinventing others without losing the distinctive Filipino flavours.

"The Consulate strives to bring diverse community partners to our events," officials said, citing as examples the soft launch in November 2024 featuring Philippine coffee and native delicacies with partners Casa Manila, Purple Bakeshop and Mineral, and the Kain Tayo group during the Women's Month celebration last month.

"Now it’s a different group for FRMC. We do this for variety and to give chance to spotlight different partners," the Consulate explained.

FRMC was launched in April 2022 across Canada, specifically in the cities of Calgary, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg. In Toronto, nine restos participated, namely: Islas Filipino BBQ & Bar, Kanto by Tita Flips, Lechon Republik, B's Sizzling Kitchen, CASA Manila, Republika Resto Bar & Grill, MB The Place To Be, Wilson's Haus of Lechon, and FV Foods.

The following year (2023), more restos joined in, increasing the number from nine to 12 in the Greater Toronto Area. Last year, as the FRMC focused on innovation, only Mineral and Mother Tongue took part. (Copyright 2025. All Rights Reserved).
