TORONTO - Former Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was arrested at the Manila airport on Tuesday morning (Manila time) upon arrival from a visit in Hongkong on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court.
The ICC has accused the 79-year-old political firebrand of crimes against humanity for the death of an estimated 12,000 people resulting from his war on drugs during his term from 2016 to 2022. Police authorities have disputed the figure, saying the toll was actually 6,200.
Multiple press reports quoted Duterte, a lawyer, as saying in Hongkong that he was prepared to be taken into custody if the ICC, which he didn't recognize, issued an arrest warrant. The Philippines withdrew from the ICC in 2019 on Duterte's order.
A lawyer for Duterte, Salvador Panelo, called the arrest "unlawful."
A social media post by Philippine authorities said Duterte "is in good condition" and that he and his entourage "are in good health and have been examined by government doctors." (Copyright 2025. All Rights Reserved).
