TORONTO - The race within the ruling Liberal Party ended on Sunday, March 9, with the election in the capital Ottawa of former banker Mark Carney, a non-member of Parliament, as its leader and successor to incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trudeau has announced his resignation in January and is expected to step down soon as he had promised once a new leader has been chosen.

Carney bested his three rivals in a landslide victory, garnering 85.9 percent of the 152,000 votes against Chrystia Freeland's 8.0 percent, Karina Gould's 3.2 percent, and Frank Baylis' 3.0 percent.

Carney's popularity will be put to the test in the federal election in Canada no later than October 20, 2025, which will elect representatives of the 343-member House of Commons.

In a statement released to media late Sunday, Carney says:

"I’m ready for the fight, and to work harder than ever before. Together we will stand up for Canadian workers, families, and businesses, because Canada is strongest when we are united.

"It's time to build together. Because we are strong – Canada strong," he added.

Carney also promised "to build the fastest-growing economy in the G7, to cut taxes that divide us and put money back into your pockets, to invest in health care, seniors, and affordable child care, to take bold action on climate, and to protect Canadian workers from (U.S. President Donald) Trump’s tariffs. (Copyright 2025.
